Editor's Comment

Shoujo animes are animes which originally aim towards girls or
gals as target audience. However nowadays there is also a very
large male audience for this anime genre (for example, Greenwood,
Vampire Princess Miyu, Karura Mau, Arslan Senki, X or Sailor Moon,
to name but a few). For classification purposes for this list,
shoujo animes are defined as animes which
1. are based on mangas being classified as shoujo mangas by the
manga industry.
2. have spinoff mangas being classified as shoujo mangas by the
manga industry.
3. are based on novels being classified as shoujo literature by the
publishing industry.
4. are no brainers and are obviously catering to a majority female
audience, such as Minky Momo.
This shoujo anime list is a list which mainly dedicates to
commercially available shoujo animes. But info containing other
shoujo or related animes is also included. This list includes all
shoujo animes up till the end of 1994. Multiple years refer to
extra series, OVAs or movies made. Anime based on novels will be
given an NA in the manga magazine category, with the mangaka slot
replaced by the novelist. Manga based on anime (eg: Anmitsu Hime:
TAKEMOTO Izumi: Nakayoshi), will be given NA in both categories.
Currently this list contains information of 142 titles.
You can locate individual anime via the index to find out its
availability, or if you are interested in a certain subgenre,
you can also locate animes via the index. Extensive individual
animes entries can be found after the index. The names and
email addresses (if any) of the contributors can be found at the
end of the list.
You are free to distribute this list for non-commercial use, but
you MUST give all contributors proper credits. Many contributors
spent tremendous efforts through research to write these synopsis
and comments. Most often than not their original works are
extremely extensive and I edited these writings into shorter,
easier to read, user friendly versions. Please respect their
goodwill. Giving proper credits to contributors will also justify
and enhance your work should you use this list for reference.
I will post this list from time to time. Should I make any
correction or addition, I will change the version number. Please
refer to the version number if necessary.
Please correct my mistake, such as translation of names and titles.
Also, if you see something which should not be included, or
vice-versa, please tell me.
I hope this anime list will enhance your enjoyment of animes,
especially the shoujo ones.

Short History of the Shoujo Anime List

Even though I have been watching numerous animes since Princess
Knight and Jungle Emperor, I did not seriously get into anime until
one and a half year ago. When I decided to pick up Japanese as
another foreign language, realizing its difficulty, I decided to
turn to anime as a fun way to learn it outside of classroom while
taking College Japanese in school. In the space of four months I
watched every conceivable popular shounen animes and I soon ran out
of interest, until one day a friend of mine accidentally rented
Cipher...
I soon accidentally found myself joining the shoujo anime mailing
list when it was freshly established (right timing). Due to my own
ignorance, and also because most members of the list are really
manga fans, I decided, with many list members' encouragement, to
compile an anime list for shoujo anime (titles only), purely for
educational purposes (spring 1994). After the shoujo panel in Anime
America (summer 1994), the list was completed, along with info such
as the anime's mangaka and its original manga magazine. However,
many members also saw that something magic was occurring and gave
me suggestions, and we decided to expand it to a more purposeful
list in the current form.
This shoujo anime list is no longer a personal notebook as I
originally intended, but now a guidebook for shoujo anime
fans from newbies to connoisseurs, also for shoujo manga fans to
find out if any anime version of their favorite works exists.

Perusha has a strange animal (a lion who lived with Perusha in
Africa and now transformed into a talking stuffed toy, so he can
still be around Perusha without causing too much trouble) as a
friend. A sort of Minky Momo, she gets transformed into a pretty
woman, with various dress. (RIV)
This is the second `magical girl' series produced by Stadio
Pierrot, I believe (the first one is "Creamy Mami"), and loosely
based on the manga version. In the manga version, her boyfriend had
no twin brother. Animater Yumiko Horasawa made her mark on this
anime by her superb drawing quality. (AAK)

A high school freshman, Hiromi Oka, joined its renowned tennis
club mainly because she was among many admirers of elegant Reika
Ryuzaki. But the new coach, Jin Munakata, names inexperienced
Hiromi as one of team members to play in coming tournament.
Depressed with hatred by other members and relentless training by
Munakata, Hiromi considers to quit playing tennis. Yet, she finds
deep down in her soul, she loves tennis after all. So, she comes
back to the club and her hidden talent starts to bloom under
Munakata's coaching. And Hiromi develops a strong, emotional bond
with her coach, not knowing that Munakata is risking his young life
due to chronic illness...(AAK)
This manga, created by YAMAMOTO Sumika, ignited huge tennis
popularity in `70s. Several anime series were made from manga, all
by director DEZAKI Osamu and animator-in-chief, SUGINO Akio. The
first series seems rough production, but next "Shin Ace o Nerae!"
is vintage of this team. Later, OVA series "Ace o Nerae! 2" and
"...2:Final Stage" were created to cover the story after Munakata's
death. The ending of these series is a bit abrupt, but otherwise,
dramatic and impressive anime, as usual. (AAK)

Iason is one of the elite in a future world-the elite are known
collectively as Blondies, and Riki is a slum kid, the leader of
a gang called the Bisons. When they meet, it's reluctant love at
first sight, and eventually Riki becomes Iason's 'pet'-complete
with pet ring, which dispenses pain or ecstasy at the owner's
will. Their relationship is disapproved of by everyone, but most
violently by Riki's old friend (and lover) Guy. I wouldn't call
it S&M, there is a lot of mental angst, but it's pretty much evenly
distributed. (MAK)
I'd say that this is the best of the shonenai videos done to
date-the animation is beautiful (although sometimes the body
proportions are way off, especially necks...), the story is
excellent, the characters are interesting. It's also quite
graphic-the 2nd more so than the first. It's also very expensive,
at 13,500 yen each. Character design and artwork by ONDA Naoyuki.

tries to win back his kingdom with the help of his faithful Baron
Marshall Daryuun and a host of other comrades. (KEM)
Character design was beautifully done by KAMIMURA Sachiko.
Nevertheless, the story is not quite intriguing and the characters
are not so lively, because too many integral parts of the original
story by TANAKA were altered or omitted. It's a real unfortunate
that TANAKA's ever-superb novel cannot reach to those non-Japanese

who became intimate with his boss (Honma-san) (during a business
trip to Niigata), while his own junior (kouhai) named Fujida was in
love with him...and then his boss started farming him out to
clients-exchanging sexual favors for contracts...It takes him a
while to figure out that his boss might not be the best person for

Very explicit....It was originally a yaoi novel. The
author said she blushed when she heard the recording, but
the actors themselves just think of it as a job and don't
feel embarrassed doing it. I'm sure there are some folks who would
die to get it. (MIN)

As the people on earth are getting worse and worse, the head angels
decided to award a negative mark for every 'bad' thing humans do
and a positive score for every 'good' thing humans do. If the
negative points reach a certain point, earth will be destroyed.
Angels who support earth are paired up with angels who dislike
earth and were then sent to earth to accumulate the points.
Chihaya and Kagetsuya are two very close friends who paired up

draws pretty manga. Earthian is a fine example and should not be

This Tezuka classic is in my opinion the most important magical
girl series of all time. The relatively short length of the series
also make it easier to collect for those who are financially less
well off. (HBV)
