He left Manchester in 1911 to study mathematical logic with Russell in Cambridge. His first great work in logic was composed while he served during World War I, first on the Russian front then in north Italy. He sent the manuscript to Russell while in a prison camp in Italy.

Released in 1919 he gave away the family fortune he had inherited and worked as a primary school teacher in Austria. In 1929 he returned to Cambridge and remained there until he resigned in 1947 except for the War years which he spent as a hospital porter.

In 1953, two years after his death, his second great work was published.
