Weil studied in Paris, Rome and Göttingen, then taught at many different universities for example Aligarh Muslim University India (1930-1932), Strasbourg France (1933-40), Sao Paulo Brazil (1945-47) and Chicago USA (1947-58). From 1958 he worked at Princeton.

His research was in number theory, algebraic geometry and group theory. Together with Dieudonné and others, he wrote under the name Boubaki, a project which attempted to give a unified description of mathematics.

Weil's most famous books include Foundations of Algebraic Geometry (1946) and Elliptic Functions According to Eisenstein and Kronecker (1976).
