Wang began to study mathematics in 1941 working under Chern. He studied under Newman at Manchester and received a Ph.D. in 1948. From 1949 he lived in the USA.

Wang's most important work is on discrete subgroups of Lie groups on which he worked from 1955 onwards. He also worked on algebraic topology and discovered the Wang sequence, an exact sequence involving homology groups.
