A young surveyor Waessenaer solved the first, but Stampionen rejected his solution. The argument was adjudicated by van Schooten who favoured Waessenaer. Descartes and Huygens became involved in the argument but Huygens subsequently employed Stampionen to tutor his sons in mathematics.
