Born: 2 Feb 1842 in Warsaw, Poland
Died: 14 Dec 1927 in Leningrad, USSR (now St Petersburg, Russia)

Sokhotsky graduated from Warsaw and received a doctorate from St Petersburg where he became a professor in 1883. Influenced by Chebyshev, he studied special functions, in particular Jacobi polynomials and Lamé functions.

Other topics he studied were singular differential equations and Zolotarev's theory of divisibility of algebraic numbers.
