Schwinger received his doctorate at the age of 21 from Columbia University, then he worked at Berkeley (1939-41) under J Robert Oppenheimer. He worked at Harvard (1945-72), then at University of California, Los Angeles (1972-94).

He was joint winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics (1965) for his work in formulating quantum electrodynamics and thus reconciling quantum mechanics with Einstein's special theory of relativity. This topic, originating with the work of Dirac, was independently studied by Feynman.
