Died: 20 Jan 1971 in Epe, Netherlands

Schouten's thesis was on tensor analysis, a topic he worked on all his life. He produced 180 papers and 6 books on the topic. Schouten applied it to Lie groups, relativity, and other topics. He is an important figure in the development of the tensor calculus.
