Friedrich Schottky studied at Berlin under Weierstrass and Helmholtz. His thesis is an important contribution to conformal mappings. He held chairs at Marburg University and Berlin University.

Most of Schottky's work concerns elliptic, abelian and theta functions, more in the spirit of Riemann's approach to function theory.
