Dan Rutherford was an undergraduate at St Andrews receiving his M.A. in 1928. Turnbull advised him to undertake research in Amsterdam and he obtained a doctorate from there with a thesis on modular invariants. His thesis appears as the Cambridge Tract Modular Invariants (1932) and was reprinted in New York in 1964.

After one year in Edinburgh he joined the staff in St Andrews. He was appointed to the Gregory Chair of Applied Mathematics in 1964. Despite his mathematical interests, since Copson held the Regius Chair of Mathematics, Rutherford was appointed to a new chair of applied mathematics.

Rutherford's most important work was Substitutional Analysis (1948) in which explict representations of the symmetric group are given.
