He is best known for his proof of the asymptotic formula for the growth of the partition function (the number of representations of a number as a sum of natural numbers). This answered questions of Leibniz and Euler and followed results obtained by Hardy and Ramanujan.
Forced to leave Germany in 1933 because of his pacifist views, he spent the rest of his life in the USA.
