Victor Alexandre Puiseux

Died: 9 Sept 1883 in Frontenay, Jura, France

Victor Puiseux worked on infinitesimal geometry, complex analysis, elliptic functions and celestial mechanics. He attended courses by Strum and became friends with Briot and Bouquet.

He further developed Cauchy's work on functions of a complex variable. He was the first to distinguish poles, essential points and branch points.

He was a keen mountaineer and was the first to scale an Alpine peak which is now named after him.
