Plana studied in Paris and was taught by Lagrange. Fourier tried to find a post for him in Grenoble but he returned to Italy. He obtained a chair in astronomy at Turin in 1811 on Lagrange's recommendation and remained there for the rest of his life.

Topics Plana worked on, in addition to astronomy, were integrals, elliptic functions, heat, electrostatics and geodesy.
