Nash studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) receiving a BA and an MA in mathematics in 1948. In 1950 he received his doctorate from Princeton with a thesis Non-cooperative Games . Then, from 1952, he taught at MIT but resigned due to ill health.

Nash established the mathematical principles of game theory. He was awarded (jointly with Selten) the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economic Science for his work in this area.
