Eliakim Moore studied at Yale, then in Europe with Kronecker, Weierstrass and Klein. Appointed professor at Chicago when the university first opened in 1892, his Ph.D. students there included Dickson, Veblen and Birkhoff.

His main areas of research were algebra and groups where he proved in 1893 that every finite field is a Galois field. he also worked on geometry, number theory and integral equations. He brought precision and rigour to all the fields he studied.
