Ferdinand Minding was self taught in mathematics, but he was to become professor at Dorpat, a post he held for 40 years.

His work, which continued Gauss's study of the differential geometry of surfaces, greatly influenced Peterson.

He also worked on differential equations, algebra, continued fractions and mechanics.
