Mazurkiewicz's Ph.D. was supervised by Sierpinski on space filling curves. Then, in 1915, he became professor at Warsaw where he remained until his death.

His main work was in topology and the theory of probability. His notion of dimension of a compact set preceded that of Menger and Urysohn by 7 years. Mazurkiewicz applied topological methods to the theory of functions, obtaining powerful results.
