Adolph Mayer studied at Königsberg under Franz Neumann and received a doctorate from Heidelberg in 1861. He taught there for the rest of his life working on differential equations, the calculus of variations and mechanics. He emphasised the principle of least action in all his work which followed the path of Lagrange and Jacobi.
