Levinson studied under Norbert Wiener and at Cambridge with Hardy. Then he studied at Princeton under von Neumann. He obtained a post at MIT where he remained for the rest of his life.

Levinson worked on non-linear differential equations and on time series. He also wrote on probability, quantum mechanics and number theory. Shortly before his death he wrote a series of important papers on the Riemann Hypothesis.
