Leshniewski studied at several universities taking his doctorate (1912) at the Polish University of Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine but then in Austria). At that time Lukasiewicz was teaching at Lwów and he greatly influenced Leshniewski in the first course on mathematical logic which he gave. Leshniewski taught at a Warsaw school, spent 1914-18 in Moscow and then, in 1919, he accepted the chair of the philosophy of mathematics at Warsaw where Lukasiewicz was already teaching.

In 1927 Leshniewski published his first mature work on the foundations of mathematics. From then until 1939 he published a series of papers giving his theories of logic and mathematics. His theories overcame the paradoxes of Russell in set theory.

Tarski was one of Leshniewski's students and was able to make known the unpublished results of Leshniewski which were destroyed in World War II.
