At university in Moscow Aleksandr Khinchin worked with Luzin and others. He studied the theory of numbers and probability theory, strengthening results of Hardy and Littlewood. He also strengthened the law of large numbers due to Borel.

Between 1932 and 1934 he laid the foundations for the theory of stationary random processes. He taught at various colleges in Moscow until 1927 when he became professor at the University of Moscow. His book Mathematical Foundations of Information Theory , translated into English from Russian in 1957 is important.
