Born: 9 March 1818 in Goldberg, Germany (now Zlotoryja, Poland)
Died: 5 April 1861 in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland)

Joachimsthal was taught by Jacobi and Bessel and obtained a doctorate from Halle in 1840. He taught at Berlin where he was a colleague of Eisenstein. Joachimsthal was Kummer's successor at Breslau in 1855 where he acquired a high reputation for teaching.

Influenced by the work of Jacobi, Dirichlet and Steiner, he wrote on the theory of surfaces where he made substantial contributions. Joachimsthal surfaces are named after him.
