Janiszewski studied at Zurich, Munich and Göttingen, receiving a doctorate from the Sorbonne in 1911 for a thesis on set theory suggested by Lebesgue. He taught at Lvov until the outbreak of World War I when he enlisted in the artillery. Then he directed a refuge for homeless children at Ewin until the University of Warsaw became Polish again in 1918 when he was offered a chair.

In addition to set theory Janiszewski produced important results in topology and the foundations of mathematics.
