Pierre Humbert was a son of Marie Georges Humbert and was educated at the École Polytechnique, then undertook research under Whittaker at the University of Edinburgh. Wounded in World War I he continued his research and obtained a doctorate in 1918. His entire teaching career was at Montpellier.

Humbert developed symbolic calculus and also wrote on the history of mathematics and astronomy.
