Jules Hoüel obtained a doctorate from the Sorbonne for research in celestial mechanics, then held the chair of pure mathematics at Bordeaux from 1859 until his death.

Hoüel was interested in non-euclidean geometry and published translations of many important works by Bolyai, Beltrami, Helmholtz and Riemann. He corresponded with Tilly on non-euclidean geometry. Hoüel also compiled log tables and worked on planetary perturbations.
