Hirst studied for his doctorate at Marburg then was influenced by Steiner to work on geometry. He became friends with Cremona, particularly sharing his keen involvment in the Italian war of unification. He returned to England where he took part in educational reforms regarding the teaching of geometry.

Hirst also worked for the education of women. He succeeded De Morgan to the chair of mathematics at University College London. His research was mostly on geometry, in particular on Cremona transformations. For this work he was awarded a Royal Society Medal in 1883.
