Hille received a Ph.D. from Stockholm in 1918 where he worked with Marcel Riesz and Mittag-Leffler. He obtained a fellowship to work with Birkhoff in Harvard. Then, in 1920, he went to Princeton where he became a professor some years later.

Hille's main work was on differential equations, Dirichlet series and Fourier series. He is well known as an author of a 2 volume calculus text.
