Herstein's family emigrated to Canada in 1928 and, after studying at Manitoba and Toronto, Herstein received a Ph.D. from Indiana for a thesis written under Zorn's supervision. Herstein worked at Chicago (where he was influenced by Abraham Albert) and, after posts at Pennsylvania and Cornell, he returned to Chicago in 1962 and remained there for the rest of his life.

His work was on groups, rings and fields and he has over 100 publications of these topics. Herstein is best known for his beautifully written algebra texts, especially Topics in algebra . He was known as 'Yitz' by his friends.
