Died: 27 July 1931 in La Bérarde, Isère, France

Herbrand studied with von Neumann, Artin and Emmy Noether. He made contributions to mathematical logic where Herbrand's theorem on quantification appears in his doctoral thesis.

Herbrand also worked on field theory considering abelian extensions of algebraic number fields. He died in a mountaineering accident in the Alps at the age of 23.
