Harish-Chandra studied at Cambridge for his Ph.D. under Dirac's supervision. He obtained his degree in 1947 and, the same year, he went to the USA. Harish-Chandra worked at the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton from 1963.

His main work was on representations of semisimple Lie groups.
