Halsted was Sylvester's first student at Johns Hopkins University and he also studied in Berlin. Returning to the USA Halsted held chairs at various universities.

Halsted gave commentaries on the work of Lobachevsky, Bolyai, Saccheri and Poincaré. He also studied the foundations of geometry.
