Halpen made major contributions to linear differential equations and algebraic space curves. He received great honours and prizes for his work on both topics. He solved problems of Chasles. He classified singular points in extending the work of Riemann.

A major figure in his time, Halpen's work was in areas which have fallen out of favour. For example his work on linear differential equations was overtaken by Lie group methods.
