Educated at Cambridge, Goodstein did research on transfinite numbers there under Littlewood's supervision. After a post in Reading he was appointed professor at Leicester in 1948 and he remained there for the rest of his life.

Goodstein worked on mathematical logic, in particular ordinal numbers, recursive arithmetic and analysis and the philosophy of mathematics.
