Geiser's great uncle was Steiner. After studying at Zurich and Berlin he went on to become professor at Zurich.

Geiser published on algebraic geometry, minimal surfaces and edited Steiner's unpublished lecture notes and treatises. He was organiser and president of the first International Congress of Mathematicians held in Zurich in 1897.
