Leopold Gegenbauer studied at Berlin from 1873 to 1875 and, after teaching at Czernowitz, he went to work with Stolz in Innsbruck. After some years teaching there he was appointed professor at Vienna in 1893 and remained there until his death.

Gegenbauer had many mathematical interests but was chiefly an algebraist. He is remembered for the Gegenbauer polynomials.
