Friedmann was educated at St Petersburg and volunteered for service in the aviation department in 1914. From 1918, he was professor of theoretical mechanics at Perm University.

Friedmann was one of the founders of dynamic meteorology, studying vortices. He also contributed to relativity theory, in particular the cosmological problem. In 1922 Friedmann postulated a "big bang" model for the evolution of the universe, being one of the first to propose this now accepted model.
