Jacques Francais was the brother of Francais Francais. He was in the army and was sent by Napoleon to Egypt, later participating in naval battles including Trafalgar. from 1811 he was professor of military art in Metz.

He worked on analytic geometry but, after his brother's death, he worked on his manuscripts and published a mixture of his own work and his brother's. He gave a geometric representation of complex numbers with interesting applications based on Argand's paper which had been sent by Legendre to his brother.
