Arthur Erdélyi

Erdélyi was awarded a doctorate from Prague in 1938 but was forced to flee by the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia. He obtained a research grant from Edinburgh which he left in 1949 to take up a chair in California. He returned to Edinburgh in 1964 where he remained until his death.

Erdélyi was a leading expert on special functions, in particular hypergeometric functions, orthogonal polynomials and Lamé functions. He also worked on fractional integration and singular partial differential equations.
