Ehresmann undertook research in Göttingen, Princeton and Paris. His doctorate from Paris was in 1930. He became a lecturer in Strasbourg in 1939. He was one of the creators of differential topology.

Ehresmann participated in the creation and development of fiber spaces, first studied in a special case by Seifert and Whitney. He became a leader in category theory after 1957 and worked in this area for 20 years.
