Patrick du Val studied at Cambridge under Baker receiving a Ph.D. in 1930. He visited Rome working with Enriques, then in 1934 he visited Princeton and attended lectures by Alexander, Eisenhart, Lefschetz, Veblen, Wedderburn and Weyl. After posts in England, Turkey and the USA he returned to England taking up a post in London where he remained until he retired.

After early work on relativity, du Val worked mainly in geometry. He worked on algebraic surfaces and later in his career du Val became interested in elliptic functions.
