Dupré was educated at École Normale Supérieure in Paris and taught in Rennes all his life as a lecturer, professor and finally as Dean of Science. Dupré won (jointly) the 1858 Academy prize for a paper on Legendre's theory of numbers. Later in his career he studied the mechanical theory of heat.
