Christian Doppler was educated in Vienna and became professor of experimental physics at the University of Vienna in 1850. He wrote on mathematics and electricity.

Doppler is best known for his principle relating the change in frequency of a source to the relative velocities of the source and the observer. He stated his principle in 1842 in Concerning the coloured light of double stars while working in Prague.
