Alfred Dixon was educated at Cambridge and graduated in 1886 becoming a Fellow in 1888. In 1901 he was appointed to the chair of mathematics at Queen's College Belfast.

His main area of research was in differential equations and he did early work on Fredholm integrals independently of Fredholm. A devout Methodist he was active in the Philharmonic Orchestra. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1904.
