Gaspard de Prony was a professor at the École Polytechnique from 1794 to 1815 and director of École des Ponts et Chaussés from 1798 until his death. Interested in engineering mathematics, de Prony worked on numerical methods contributing to interpolation, optimisation and trigonometry.
