Florimond de Beaune was a jurist and only an amateur mathematician. However he produced the first important introduction to Descartes' cartesian geometry. De Beaune proved among many results that y^2=xy+bx, y^2=-dy+bx, y^2=bx-x^2 represent hyperbolas, parabolas and ellipses respectively.
