Edward Collingwood was influenced by Hardy at Cambridge and also by Littlewood, his Ph.D. supervisor. He was Chief Scientist in the Admiralty mine design department in 1943. He was chairman of the Council of Durham University for most of the 1950's and 1960's.

He is best remembered for his work with Mary Cartwright on the theory of cluster sets. Collingwood was elected to the Royal Society in 1965.
