Clebsch was co-founder of Mathematische Annalen an important mathematics journal. His main research was on invariant theory. He went back to Abel's approach to algebraic geometry and considered an algebraic approach rather than Riemann who used a geometric approach. Clebsch introduced the genus of a curve. Max Noether and Brill were among his students and continued his work on curves.
