Eduard Cech's studies at the Charles University of Prague were interrupted by World War I and, although he went there in 1912 he could not graduate before 1920. He studied with Fubini in 1921-22 and they wrote two books together. He then worked at Masarky University in Brno becoming a professor there in 1928.

Cech became interested in topology, in particular he became one of the foremost experts on combinatorial topology. His work was important in the development of functional analysis. He was influenced by the work of Aleksandrov and Urysohn and Cech set up a school which produced 26 papers in 3 years which ended when Czech universities were closed down at the onset of World War II.

After the War he went to the Charles University of Prague and began an administrative career, but in the 1950's he turned to differential geometry writing 17 papers on that topic.
