Edmond Bour was educated in Paris and was professor in Saint-Étienne then at the École Polytechnique. He received the mathematics prize of the Academy in 1861 for a paper Théorie de la déformation des surfaces but was defeated by Bonnet for membership of the Academy. Because of this Bour turned to mechanics. He made many significant contributions to analysis, algebra, geometry and applied mechanics despite his early death.
