Maxime Bôcher studied at Harvard then went to Göttingen where he attended lectures by Klein, Schönflies, Schwarz and Voigt and obtained a doctorate on a topic he was encouraged to study by Klein.

Bôcher returned to Harvard as an instructor, then in 1894 assistant professor becoming professor in 1904. Bôcher published around 100 papers on differential equations, series, and algebra. His work on algebra, published in 1907, was particularly important.
